Who can enroll in university?
Most people are surprised when they realise how flexible UK universities really are. You don’t need perfect grades, A levels, or a traditional education path. Below is a quick breakdown of who can apply, what you need, and how you can still enrol even if you never finished high school.
Academic requirements
To join a UK university, you’ll normally need one of the following:
• A foundation-level entry route (very common for adults)
• College qualifications (Level 2/3, BTEC, Access to HE, high school
diplomas)
• HNC/HND → Top-Up routes
• Or relevant work experience (accepted by many unis for adults)
You do not need A levels unless you’re applying for highly competitive subjects like Medicine or Dentistry.
Language requirements
You need to show you can study in English. This can be done through:
• A university internal English test (most popular and easiest)
• Functional Skills / GCSE English
• IELTS /PTE / Duolingo (optional for many courses)
• Proof of English-taught education
Most adults simply take the internal English test – fast, free, and accepted instantly.
Residency requirements
Your residency status decides how you apply and what funding you qualify for.
You’re usually eligible if you have:
• Settled status
• Pre-settled status (and you work in the UK)
• Indefinite Leave to Remain
• Refugee status or humanitarian protection
• Irish citizenship
• UK nationality
Age requirements
There is no upper age limit.
You can apply at 21, 35, 50, or older – universities welcome mature applicants.
You’re classed as a mature student from age 21 onwards.

Below are the most popular options for mature students:
2 Days per Week
(10:00–14:00)
Perfect for parents who need to drop off and pick up their children from school.
You’ll attend university during school-friendly hours, giving you a structured routine without affecting family life. The rest of the week is for light online study at your own pace.
Weekend Classes
(10:00–14:00 or 17:00–21:00)
Ideal if you work Monday to Friday or do shift work.
You can choose:
- Daytime weekends: 10:00–14:00 (calm, relaxed pace)
- Evening weekends: 17:00–21:00 (great for busy parents or full-time workers)
Weekend schedules are extremely popular with mature students who want to keep weekdays free.
1 Day Online + 1 Day on Campus (09:30–16:30)
A blended timetable combining:
- One full day on campus (face-to-face teaching)
- One full day online (live or recorded classes)
This gives you structure while still offering the flexibility of learning from home.

Before you can enrol at a UK college or university, you’ll need a few essential documents. These help the university confirm your identity, your residency, and your eligibility for funding. Don’t worry — you don’t need a folder full of certificates. Most students only need the basics.

Student Finance Explained (2026)
A simple breakdown of how Student Finance works in England for 2025 — what you can get, who can apply, how repayment works, and the biggest myths that confuse students. Everything written in plain English so anyone can understand it.
Tuition Fee Loan
This loan pays 100% of your university fees, directly to your university. You don’t pay anything upfront. There is no credit check, no age limit, and you only start repaying after you’re earning above the income threshold. Every eligible student gets the same amount because it covers your full course fees automatically.
• Maximum Tuition Fee Loan for 2025/26: £9,535 per year
Maintenance Loan
This is the money paid into your bank account to help with living costs like rent, food, transport, childcare, and bills. The amount you get depends mainly on your age, marital status, your residence type and where you study (London or outside London). It is paid three times a year and you only repay it when your income is high enough.
Maximum Maintenance Loan amounts for 2025/26:
• Living with parents: up to £8,877
• Living away from parents, outside London: up to £10,544
• Living away from parents, in London: up to £13,762
• Aged 60 or over on the first day of the course: up to £4,461
Grants (Money you do NOT repay)
Grants are extra support for students with children, dependants, or disabilities — and you never pay them back. Examples include the Childcare Grant, Parents’ Learning Allowance, Adult Dependants’ Grant, and Disabled Students’ Allowance. These can make a huge difference, especially for mature students balancing family and study.
Maximum grant amounts for 2025/26:
• Childcare Grant (CCG):
– Up to 85% of childcare costs, capped at
• £193.62 per week for one child
• £331.95 per week for two or more children
• Parents’ Learning Allowance (PLA):
– Up to £2,026 per year
• Adult Dependants’ Grant (ADG):
– Up to £3,438 per year
• Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA):
– Not based on income; can cover equipment, software, support workers, travel and more.
– No maximum for some categories, the total depends on your needs assessment.
Eligibility Rules
To receive Student Finance, you must meet residency requirements (settled, pre-settled with work history, ILR, or certain protected statuses), be enrolled in an approved university course, and not already hold an equivalent degree unless exceptions apply. Mature students (21+) follow the same rules — your age does not stop you from getting funding.
Repayment Example
You only repay once you earn over £25,000/year.
For example, if you earn £27,000, you only repay on the £2,000 above the threshold:
£2,000 × 9% = £180 per year → about £15 per month.
If your income drops below £25,000, your repayments stop automatically.
Common Misconceptions
• “Student loans affect your credit score.” False — they don’t.
• “You start repaying immediately.” No — only after hitting the income threshold.
• “Mature students get less support.” Not true — most get the same funding as everyone else.
• “You must repay everything.” Many students never repay the full amount; the loan is written off after 40 years.
• “You’re in debt.” Technically yes, but it behaves more like a graduate tax — based on income, not loan size.

Do I have to pay anything for your university enrollment services?
No, you do not have to pay anything to enroll at university with us. All our university enrollment services are completely free for students.
Is the government funding a loan?
Yes and No. Tuition Fees and Maintenance Loan are repayable, but grants such as, Childcare Grant or Adult Dependent Grant are not.
When do you have to repay the loan?
Repayment starts when you finish your course, or you stop attending. If you earn more than 25k you will repay 9% of what you earn above this threshold, but if you earn below 25k you will not repay a penny back.
